30 April 2026 Experiential Action for the Protection of Mount Hymettus - Environmental Educational Activity by SPAY within the European GreCo Programme
In the forest area of Mount Hymettus, where the city meets the mountain, a cleanup action took place that also included awareness-raising and hands-on experiential activities.
The initiative was implemented within the framework of the Memorandum of Cooperation between SPAY and Humanity Greece, a partnership that emphasizes participation, prevention, and strengthening people’s connection with the natural environment.
The experiential action focused on two thematic areas:
– Presentation of SPAY’s initiatives and the GreCO program, combined with a practical cleanup of waste in the area, which is considered one of the busiest and most ecologically sensitive parts of the mountain.
Within this context, participants were informed about the direct and indirect impacts of pollution on the ecosystem, as well as the importance of proper waste management by visitors. In addition, emphasis was placed on the significance of the forest understory and the species that comprise it, as integral elements of the biodiversity and ecological balance of Mount Hymettus, as well as on the necessity of systematic cleaning during the fire prevention period.
– Awareness and interaction with the firefighting community, through the Voluntary Forest Protection Team and the Forest and Natural Environment Protection Center.
The participants dedicated their time and energy as part of a corporate volunteering program and took part in the entire experiential action.
