1st GreCO Workshop: Sustainable Route Development

1st GreCO Workshop: Sustainable Route Development

The 1st workshop of the GreCO project was conducted successfully under the auspices of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering. Traffic experts assessed the traffic and mobility dynamics present at the destination. This provided insights into traffic-related challenges while leading to the proposal of effective solutions to enhance mobility management within the area. The main purpose was to evaluate current and anticipated traffic issues and suggest actionable strategies. The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), in collaboration with the University of Piraeus Research Centre (UPRC), developed together routes that connect the primary Points of Interest within the Municipality of Elliniko-Argyroupoli. In the second phase, they identified optimal routes for public transportation. The focus has been on designing routes that are safe, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable, thereby improving connectivity and enhancing day-to-day mobility for both residents and visitors. These green routes are intended to serve the needs of both locals and tourists, promoting a more sustainable and accessible travel experience.

Main purpose of the Workshop

The workshop was a vital and structured event designed to rigorously test and validate the proposed transportation routes within the Municipality of Elliniko-Argyroupoli. Its objectives included assessing the quality of experiences during the route, evaluating the safety and convenience of each option, and determining the time required for traversal of each route. Additionally, the workshop aimed to explore the connectivity of these routes with various attractions and other significant points of interest throughout the Municipality. The initial workshop engaged key partners, including representatives from the Municipality of Elliniko-Argyroupoli, Elliniko Alelixis (ELAN), the University of Piraeus Research Centre (UPRC), the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), and the National Observatory of Athens (NOA). The Municipality provided a public bus to navigate the planned routes, facilitating a comprehensive real-time routing evaluation. This collaborative effort also allowed the consortium to systematically identify and catalogue the Points of Interest along the routes, ensuring that the proposed transportation initiatives are both practical and beneficial to the community.
