Real Engagement and Coparticipation of Local Destination Stakeholders

Real Engagement and Coparticipation of Local Destination Stakeholders

The GreCO project is successfully proceeding with its webinars and educational activities, marking an important step towards the active engagement and participation of local destination stakeholders in sustainable tourism development. Through these initiatives, GreCO promotes knowledge sharing, capacity building and the adoption of more sustainable practices across the tourism sector.

Webinars: Encouraging Dialogue and Knowledge Exchange

Two GreCO webinars have already been successfully implemented, bringing together participants to explore key challenges and opportunities in sustainable tourism.

On 19 May 2026, “ANASKAFES – ROOTS & ROUTES: Culture, Tourism, Future” took place at the University of Piraeus, in collaboration with archaeologist and digital creator Konstantinos Loukopoulos, creator of The Mythologist Project. Bringing together students, professionals and cultural enthusiasts, the webinar explored the relationship between cultural heritage, tourism, sustainability and innovation. Discussions highlighted the role of local identity, digital communication and collaboration in fostering community engagement and sustainable development.

On 28 September 2026, “Shaping the Future of Urban Tourism”, hosted by the MBA Tourism Management programme at the University of Piraeus, focused on the development of more responsible, inclusive and sustainable urban tourism. Participants exchanged perspectives on strengthening the relationship between destinations, local communities, culture and the environment, highlighting collaboration and shared responsibility as essential elements of sustainable tourism planning.

Both webinars provided opportunities for dialogue, the exchange of perspectives and greater awareness of the role stakeholders can play in shaping the future of tourism. Recordings and further information are available on the GreCO Webinars page: https://grecoproject.eu/webinars/ .

Educational Videos: Practical Knowledge for Sustainable Tourism

GreCO has initiated the distribution of educational videos to stakeholders through the project’s digital platform. Designed primarily for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), policymakers, NGOs and cultural organisations, these resources aim to strengthen stakeholders’ knowledge and capacity to integrate sustainability into their activities and decision-making.

The educational content focuses on three core themes: sustainable business practices, minimising environmental impact and intercultural competence. Through practical guidance, expert insights and examples, the videos support SMEs in adopting greener business models and improving their marketing strategies, while helping organisations and public authorities promote sustainable practices and respond more effectively to the needs of diverse visitor groups.

The GreCO digital platform provides a shared knowledge environment featuring educational resources, best practices, guidelines, examples, case studies and tools for sustainable destination development and intercultural communication. New educational content is planned every two months, supporting continuous learning and the wider uptake of sustainable practices.

Through the successful launch of these activities, GreCO is creating new opportunities for stakeholder engagement, participation and capacity building, reinforcing the role of local actors in the transition towards more sustainable and inclusive tourism destinations.
